New Drummer In Town

He can play.

I could tell that his rudiments were in pretty good shape from his involvement in the school band last year. He was on a concert snare. A full kit is a bit more challenging. A band looks to the drummer to lead both in terms of tempo and dynamics. And, at 14 years of age, Matthew did a terrific job stepping up and learning the instrument.

We had agreed that he start his 10,000 hour journey on the kit this summer. Although he has not yet logged his 10,000 hours — that may take a decade or two — he has dramatically improved his musical talent on the drums. Why? Practice. Lessons. And now, some experience.

We played together for the first time last week as part of a band.

He did an amazing job. I was so happy to be up there with him and I hope that we will be able to play together for many more years to come.

I hope Matthew doesn’t abandon the guitar, after having made that great Cleaver Caster! However, being a multi-instrumentalist is also a good thing!

I always thought Matthew should be a drummer! He could play guitar for sure, but why settle if you have what it takes to get behind the kit! lol. I am SO excited for him 🙂 I have years of back issues of Modern Drummer I would lend if he’s ever interested!
