The Windows Era Is Over

Apple achieved a significant milestone today. They became the most valuable U.S. technology company with a market cap of $228.56 billion. They are now the second-largest U.S. company by market capitalization.

Apple’s market cap was $88.68 billion on Oct. 2, 2008 and Microsoft’s was $228.35 billion on Sept. 29, 2008. Microsoft’s market cap is virtually unchanged. Different story for Apple.

The Windows era is over.

I would strongly argue that the perception of Windows Vista (and the John Hodgeman spots) had equal importance as any of the technical feats Apple has rolled out.

    So Microsoft is now chasing:
*Apple – OS, mobile, tablet, and content (on-demand music, video)
*Google – search, ad-revenue, productivity (Office; E-Mail; Backoffice) and soon entering low-end netbook space (Walmart crowd)
*VMWare – virtualization (Hyper-V / Windows Virtualization services are years behind in terms of market space)
*OEM’s are scared (HP, Dell, Gateway now offering wider variety of open source OS options)
*Sony / Nintendo for the gaming platform (Natal price point *5* times expected price; Sony motion already taking off; XBox creator leaving (http://voices.allthingsd.com/20100527/the-rise-and-fall-of-microsoft%E2%80%99s-xbox-champions-robbie-bach-and-j-allard/); Nintendo is printing money with DS / Wii).

so, Apple got a 88 billion dollar market cap (Which means their costumers I think, and Microsoft has 228 billion. why is that even though Microsoft’s PC’s crash a lot?

but it says that Microsoft still has loads of money from their costumers. And yes even though Microsoft crashes a lot, how come more people seem to like Microsoft OVER Apple? :/

Microsoft does have a lot of money. Microsoft is used by many, many people. I suspect some people like Microsoft, some people do not like Microsoft and some people simply tolerate Microsoft 🙂
