The Horror, The Horror
“Hello, can I speak to Richard please?”
“This is Richard.”
“Hi. This is Andrew from Bell. I’m afraid I have some bad news…”
I don’t remember much of what he said after that. Something about being too far from the box. I do remember him laughing and saying things like: “8 kilometers from the box! What were they thinking? Why did they tell you that your line could support DSL? There is no way you can get DSL out there. No chance. Not in a million years.”
The world went dark after that. Images began to flash in my mind. Very slowly mind you as I was trying to download them with my current Internet service: rotary dial telephones, 300 baud modems, turtles, smart cars, GO trains, traffic in Toronto, wireless rural Internet access. And the music! Paul Simon singing “slow down, you move too fast” over and over.
The horror. The horror.
Hi Richard,
What about trying WTC Communications? They are a local company – worth a try… I’m surprised about KOS not having high speed or Bell not having it with the satellite. I hope it works out. That would be painful I’m sure!
Hilary
Hi Richard,
Can you get Cogeco service where you are?
Andrea
Hello Richard,
I ran into the same issue when I moved out of the GTA to “get away from it all” Which I guess includes a high speed link to the out side world. I ended up going with Xplornet high speed (well faster than dialup) satellite. It may end up being your option as well http://www.xplornet.com/index.php
Regards,
Rick
Hi Hilary,
Unfortunately WTC does not radiate well into this area and their service is up to 2mbps. Faster than dial-up and maybe getting into high-speed territory if the speed is 2mbps. It is that “up to” clause that is always disconcerting!
Hi Andrea,
Unfortunately Cogeco does not string cable this far.
Hi Rick,
Interesting that Xplornet does offer a high-speed wireless solution for my area. I will take a closer look at their services.
