TASER is an acronym: Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle. Predictably, there is a corporate website. And here is what the company says about its products:
TASER International’s products protect life, providing advanced Electronic Control Devices (ECDs) for use in the law enforcement, medical, military, corrections, professional security, and personal protection markets. TASER devices use proprietary technology to incapacitate dangerous, combative, or high-risk subjects who pose a risk to law enforcement officers, innocent citizens, or themselves in a manner that is generally recognized as a safer alternative to other uses of force. TASER technology saves lives every day, and the use of TASER devices dramatically reduces injury rates for police officers and suspects.
So, a Taser protects life and saves lives every day. Except, of course, for Robert Dziekanski’s last day on this planet. In Canada no less. His story can be found here. I watched the raw video of the incident where he was Tasered not once, but twice. And for what purpose?
I am shocked. The video provides a compelling perspective of the incident. And what I saw was a complete and utter overreaction by police enforcement. I cannot believe that this type of action took place in Canada.
