Yelling, Shouting or the Like

We have a noise bylaw in our community. Yelling, shouting or the like is prohibited between 11:00pm to 7:00am on weekdays and 11:00pm to 9:00am on week-ends.

Our immediate neighbours need constant reminding of this bylaw.

We have a wonderful home in a beautiful neighbourhood. And for some peculiar reason we have been surrounded by two families that behave in the most bizarre fashion. One family lives like an animal house with constant, excessive outdoor partying. And the other family is blissfully unaware that the constant screaming and yelling of their children is quite annoying. Particularly after midnight.

Thankfully the animal house family has sold their house. The other family is still hanging in there. We have had several discussions with them about the level of noise and it really comes down to this: we have to take the action to tell them that their noise level is inappropriate.

On Saturday, we were awoken after midnight by yelling and screaming in the backyard of our neighbour. It took two requests, at their door no less, to get the noise stopped.

I am certain that they do not understand the stress their constant noise has caused our family.

    Richard,

My parents experinced the same thing, with the situation finally rectified by their selling and moving into a condo – While I do not suggest you take the same drastic action, prior to that a call to the Police proved to be the trick. After their first visit, all was quiet….sometimes drastic circumstances require drastic action – you have nothing to lose. R

The police had been called repeatedly to the animal house. One of our neighbours formally petitioned the city to enforce the bylaw. This family refused to be reasonable. It was so bad that we began the process of considering a move. However, my view was that they would not stay and thankfully they did put up their house for sale. The house sold and the animal house family moves next month.

The other family got into their house through a lottery win. For the longest time, they did not work at all. They have started to work now. I suspect that they are under financial duress and that they will need to move. My reason for this insight is that one of their bill collectors came to our door asking if we had seen them recently.

In the meantime, we will have no choice but to use formal channels to ensure that they behave reasonably. Quite frustrating!
