Sound City Studios

Mar.10.2009

Sound City Studios recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. Which, in the recording business, is something of a miracle. Their website is similar to the general vibe of the facility — just a bit off the mainstream. But still pretty cool.

There is a lot of history in that studio. And a belief in the magic sound of the iconic Neve consoles in the two rooms. Studio A features a Neve 8028 (pictured below) and Studio B an 8078.

As far as I know, the studio is still all-analog. No Pro Tools in the house. Unless you bring one in under rental.

Going, Going, Gone

Oct.11.2008

Looks like the recent economic turmoil is hitting the recording industry pretty hard as well.

Sound Kitchen went down yesterday. And another interesting studio went up for sale on music row. Will there be any buyers?

Sunshine Mastering

Aug.10.2008

Sunshine Mastering was good enough to post a photo diary of their recent build. You can see the full thread here. Below is the working floor plan as well as a shot from one of the control rooms as it was nearing completion.

David Gilmour

Jun.16.2008

David Gilmour, of Pink Floyd fame, has a personal recording studio. Unlike other studios that I have profiled in the past, this one is featured on YouTube. Fascinating.

My Bedroom Studio

Jun.03.2008

I came across an interesting site yesterday called My Bedroom Studio. The site has a collection of studios that people have in their houses.

The studios range from the typical home studio — an assorted array of low-cost devices tucked away in a corner — to some really impressive setups. The first photo is what I would have expected in a home studio. The second photo was not. I would not want to mix in a room with such a sloped ceiling but nonetheless that room has an outstanding set of equipment. Easily a quarter million or more.

My studio is also in my home and it is the bottom photo. And once we move, I get to rebuild it again. For the third time.

2 Hard Records

Jun.01.2008

Mix Magazine has the Class of 2008 in June’s magazine. The article looks at a selection of some of the best rooms built or renovated in 2008.

More and more personal facilities are making the list. The one pictured below is a personal facility built in Kingston, Jamaica for producer Jeremy Harding. Harding manages Sean Paul. A very nice looking room which features a Digidesign D-Command console and Pro Tools HD.

Sweetwater Sound

May.27.2008

With a pending move, I am going to have to give some thought to a new release of Whisperwood Studios. So many nice rooms have been built over the years. Here is another one from music retailer Sweetwater.

Sweetwater Productions is a trio of recording studios designed by Russ Berger. Great looking space.

Rock Bottom Studios

May.03.2008

It has been a little while since I last profiled a recording studio. Rockbottom Studios was designed by L P Swist Designs. The building is located over a stream and houses a 5.1 control room with three isolated recording areas. Very nice facility in Makanda, Illinois.
