I received my invitation to the grand opening of Noble Street Studios in Toronto. I’ve done a couple of projects with the studio manager when he was at a different studio and he has asked me a couple of times to drop by while the studio was under construction. It now looks as though it is finished. I’m going to see if I can get there next week and tour the completed studio. It does look like a top-flight facility. The photo above is the control room of Studio A. Below is the control room of Studio B and then the talent room for Studio A. Very nice.

I received a note from Michael Tiemann yesterday. His new studio is now up and running. Manifold Recording is situated on 17 acres in Pittsboro, North Carolina. A stunning facility that features a 64-channel API Vision analog console with 128 moving faders, Dynaudio M4 active bi-amped main monitors with 1200 watts per side of Bryston amplification, and an abundance of outboard gear by Universal Audio, Manley, Tube-Tech, BAE, Millennia, DW Fearn, Lavry, API, Avalon.

Doug McClement heads up LiveWire Remote Recorders. Doug and I have a few things in common. We both have a connection to Kingston, we both worked for big banks in information technology and we both have a passion for audio engineering.

LiveWire has had a busy year. The LiveWire mobile rig provided the music mix for Global’s national telecast on New Year’s Eve with Barenaked Ladies, Great Big Sea, and Kardinal Offishall, with an audience of 30,000 at Queen Victoria Park. Doug won a Gemini Award for Best Sound in a Music, Comedy or Variety Special for his mix of the 2010 Juno Awards.

LiveWire recorded a Christmas special starring The Canadian Tenors, with special guests Paul Anka, David Foster, Stephan Moccio, and Jackie Evancho. The show was taped at Showline Studios and aired on CBC-TV on Christmas Day.

The LiveWire mobile rig also did the music mix for the 2010 Canada’s Walk of Fame Gala at the Canon Theatre in Toronto in October. Performers included David Clayton-Thomas, Burton Cummings, Jully Black, Hawksley Workman, Nikki Yanofsky and Alex Cuba.

I had profiled LiveWire back in 2007 and there have been lots of changes since then including the addition of a new SSL C200 console. Here is a copy of the floorplan as well as a photo of the control room with the new desk. Doug was also kind enough to pass me a sneak peek of a cPaisley panoramic of the mobile rig. House of Blues Studios span locations in Encino, Nashville and Memphis. I really like the Nashville space. The Tom Hidley designed control room features an 80 input SSL 9000J. Studio A offers Kinoshita / TAD mains and custom made Charles Diana amps. Neve and API pres with a fully dressed Pro Tools implementation.

The Encino location features a control room with a 36 channel, 32 buss, custom Neve. There is also an API 1604 sidecar. I chose to highlight the 1073 channels in the last photo. I love 1073 preamps.

Lakeside Studios is a recording studio in Knoxville, Tennessee that overlooks Ft. Loudon Lake. A comfortable and intimate studio that features a Nuendo DAW. It is the closest professional facility I could find near our vacation spot in Gatlinburg.

Phase One C Room was designed by Pilchner-Schoustal. The room features a 48 input SSL Duality console and monitors by DynAudio, Kranis One and Tannoy. I’ve had the pleasure to master in this room.

A beautiful personal recording space designed by Russ Berger Design Group. Radiobu is an 1,100 square foot production space that supports multimedia.

The studio consists of a main control room, a large glass recording booth, a machine room, kitchenette, bathroom and lounge. It houses a Digidesign Icon D-Control console along with a large collection of vintage recording equipment and instruments.
