Many churches do not lead with care and compassion. And some churches that I have attended are inappropriately focused on command and control as well as legalism. Sad to say, the way this family operated is really not all that different than the way some churches operate.

That's really freaky. Sometimes people say things to me about Christianity and I'm like, "Where did you get that idea from?" These people. These are the people who misunderstand the message of Christ and give the rest of us a bad name. With that said though, I'm not sure if your expirience with churches has been quite like this one (or atleast I'd hope not), but it's a good point to make about the community and unconditional love. I've always tried to live by the saying, "And they will know we are Christians by our love." Not that they will recognize the Christians by the unique way they exploit people.
